Immerse in Baguio City’s Literary World

By Joan Dalacan – Are you wondering about your next destination in Baguio City? Are you tired of the bustling city? It may be time to slow down and see the city’s literary landscape.

With the rise in usage of digital devices, book readers decreased. The younger generation now prefers reading on their devices as they may prefer audiobooks, and soft copies are much cheaper than hard copies. However, reading advocates in Baguio City continue to thrive and try to make an impact on every book lover. Here are some bookshops you may consider buying books to read and support literary writers.

Mt. Cloud Bookshop

Founded in August 2010 by Baguio-born sisters Padma and Feliz Perez, Mt Cloud Bookshop, an independent bookshop in Baguio City, was their family’s collective dream. Inspired by beloved havens for intellectuals and artists like Cecile Afable’s Ato Bookshop and Gallery and Jorge Arago’s Angel’s Trumpet, it quickly became a beloved fixture in the city.

Located in Casa Vallejo at Yangco Road,Corner Brent Rd., the bookshop boasts a diverse selection of Philippine literature and scholarly works, ranging from famous to rare finds, focusing on Filipiniana. While 80% of their collection highlights local authors and themes, they also offer few books from foreign publishers, making it a haven for independent authors and tiny publishing houses. The owner dedicated a special section in this bookshop to books on Northern Luzon, including those by writers who have lived in Baguio City.

Beyond providing books, Mt. Cloud Bookshop hosts literary events such as poetry readings, writing workshops, and author meet-and-greets. These events are on their Facebook page, Mt. Cloud Bookshop, which is regularly updated.

Bookends

Near the Session Road is a bookstore described as “Best-kept secret of the city,” by the owner, Maricar Docyogen. However, for those who have stumbled upon its cozy confines, it becomes an oasis of literary treasures and a sanctuary for book lovers amidst the city’s bustling streets.

This bookshop is an independent store that sells all types of books. They sell mainly used copies but are often in excellent condition and very cheap. You can buy books here for as low as P25.

Bookends sell their books both offline and online. If you don’t have the time to visit their store, you can always follow their Facebook page, Bookends Bookshop Philippines, because they regularly upload titles there. They usually list new titles on their page a few times a day.
